  5. tides allowed few successful escapes. Inmates
  6. included the gangster Al Capone and the
  7. `Birdman of Alcatraz', a prisoner who used
  8. his time in solitary confinement to become an
  9. authority on caged birds. American Indian
  10. `nationalists' briefly took over the island
  11. 1970 as a symbol of their lost heritage.
